How and why your body stores fat:

Your body is a magnificent machine!  It responds to your environment and reacts to the instructions you send it.  The problem for most of us is that we unknowingly send the message:  "Store fat!  Make my metabolism as efficient as possible.  Preferentially burn muscle." 

If you are living in an environment where food is scarce (caveman, drought, famine), these are the appropriate messages to send your body.  However, in our modern reality, with a fast-food restaurant on every street corner, you need to communicate the opposite message to your metabolism.  "Times are good!  Kick up my energy levels.  Build muscle.  And burn fat!"

How do you communicate with your metabolism?  Well you don't sit down with it and give it a lecture about our society of abundance, and that it really ought to get with the program and start behaving like a good little metabolism and build muscle and burn fat.

You communicate to your metabolism with food!  Not drugs, pills, herbs or even a bullhorn?just healthy, nutritious food?and lots of it!

Understanding why so many people fail: This destructive pattern is repeated millions and millions of times:

You want to lose fat, so you starve yourself.  You eat less than 1200 calories per day.  Your body can only interpret this in one way:  "These are lean times, get efficient!"  By "getting efficient" your body actually does the opposite of what you intend.  An efficient metabolism holds fat and burns muscle!  Muscle is calorically expensive, so your body burns it for fuel thereby increasing your metabolic efficiency.  You may be losing weight, but you are NOT losing fat!  Muscle is several times denser than fat, so even though you weigh less, your body fat percentage actually climbs.

Under these conditions, your body also stores additional fat, and that is the way the human metabolism is.  Your fat reserves are your last store of energy.  In contrast to muscle tissue, it only requires a couple of calories per day to maintain a pound of fat, and each pound of fat provides your body with about 3500 calories of energy.  So, under starvation conditions, your body keeps fat at all costs until it is absolutely necessary to use your final store of energy.  If we weren't built this way, we would not exist as a species.

Taking this further?after several days or weeks of starving yourself, you finally eat a decent meal.  Your body which is conditioned to hold fat, is NOW conditioned to store fat.  It now puts all those excess calories into body fat stores, not into energy, and certainly does not have the ability to store it as metabolically expensive muscle tissue.

Now, say after a month of starvation, you can't take any more of this self deprivation so you return to your normal lifestyle.  Perhaps you lost 10lbs during your DIET and expect to maintain your new found weight loss.

Understand that YOU have just made your metabolism an extremely efficient FAT-STORING machine and you have effectively burned 5 or 6 pounds of muscle with your new DIET, so now your metabolism can put that fat back on faster than ever before!  It is shameful, but many diet companies, leverage this yo-yo effect to get you back time & time again so that they can continue to take your money.
