Update

Here’s an update. Started another rotation last spring..felt motivated...continued on but realized I lost the big push by the time conditioning was over...plugged through the summer..competed in the Idaho Sr. games in the javelin, hammer throw, 100m and 200m run. Qualified for nationals at Palo Alto next summer. Took a calorie drop a week ago and I have some drive back. Still doing Cross Fit at Gold’s 4x/week. It can be brutal but I love it. Had an injury just before the games w/ my piriformis and didn’t do much except practice the jav...didn’t run at all until the games and didn’t get back to Cross Fit until Oct. Luckily, I could get off the start at the games in Aug. Better time in the 100 but not as hot in the 200 although Gold medals in both as well as the field events. I’ll get back with my track coach next spring and get ready to go again. It’s a blast. I’m at a point when all I can do is try my best and just be there. I do as much as I can to learn new things and stay in shape. I’m not the fastest and don’t throw the farthest but I do it with gusto. This has been a busy year. My granddaughter is 5 which seems impossible. We swam all summer and had fun together. She can go anywhere in the pool so I played like an idiot. Boise had it’s first snow several weeks ago...now it’s in the high 60’s. BSU is undefeated and I hope it stays that way. Best to everyone. I think the only way to succeed is to pray for discipline every morning. Gwen

It is so good to hear from you. I wondered what you had going on. Sounds like you are ready to get back in the groove. If you have been able to maintain, it is better than most have done. Sounds like you have really been working out and must be very fit. Exercise is more important than people are willing to give credit for. Keep on keepin on.

Hi- This seems to be a good time for many of us to start second rotations. Reached my goal in summer of 2007. Maintained throughout and now I have a new goal to lose more fat% and weight. Hopefully I won't gain too much in conditioning(going through analysis now) I will miss the cardio though! We all need to keep focused to reach the finish line- good luck in your endeavors!

Wow, Gwen....you motivate me!!! I hope you have great success with this rotation. I will be starting my second one the first of December. Best wishes! Cindy

Feeling awesome!

I have finally lost 15 pounds, I love what I am eating, some days I admit not to eating my plan, but overall I have made some great changes in my diet and now the weight is coming off. I am finally wearing jeans I have not worn for a year, and they are feeling loose right out of the dryer! haha.. I still have 15 pounds to go to my goal weight, but I feel I am on the right track. Grarey(sister)is such a help, and just looks so good. Flacadriver(neice) and I are hoping to follow in her footsteps of being strong tiny and healthy. I admire everyone in this program. I believe this is a great program for getting on the right track for a healthy diet. It sure gives a wakeup call when you plug in some food item and think WOW it isn't that good to be so bad for you. haha

You know what is so funny? (I just wrote this in a response to somebody...) People always start this program looking for results...NOW! It is kind of like watched pot that will never boil. But if you just stick with it...trust the process...it is almost like one day you wake up and you look and feel great. And then it is like the weight just continues to come off (you hit that sweet spot). Good for you sticking with it until you got there!

MJ - so good of you to let us know of your progress! Congratulations - 15 pounds! WOW indeed! I can imagine how ood you feel. Let the wave continue to inspire you to eat well and exercise every day!~Maxine~

Finally..a picture

I went through a divorce last year, had thyroid problems for years and have never been so heavy. I had been starving myself the last few years. My mom, grarey, had amazing results on the program so I wanted to start too. Started FB June 4th and finally lost 3# and 3% BF. I've been frustrated up to this point but I'm starting to feel that there is hope. I've stuck with it and seeing the percentage of fat lose has made it worth it. I think my body is finally ready to let go and I can't wait to see what that looks like.

At the end of week 3 and ready for more!

Well, I am at the end of week 3 in conditioning. I have 4 more weeks to go and I am so excited. The first week of conitioning I dropped 6 pounds! I gained 3 of those pounds back, but when my mom (grarey) and I did my measurements I had lost 2% body fat!!! I am really looking forward to where this journey takes me. My body is working better, I have more energy and I just feel better in general already. I also have gotten out of the bad habit of eating out all the time. yay!!

a little frustrated

I am starting week 3of Fat Burning. My body does not seem to want to give up the weight, I am sticking with it though, since I feel really good about the way I am eating. I may not be losing the weight but I just feel healthier then I did before I started. I read durtgirl's journey yesterday and was totaly inspired to keep going on my own transformation. I have given up Lean Cuisine's,protein bars, diet soda, dairy, and sweets..unless they are homemade which is very rare these days! haha My sister Gwen(grarey) is helping me just about everyday on this journey towards my goal of my own healthy stong lean body. So a big THANK YOU to Gwen!! MJ

Hi again MJ, you are on the right track: giving up some processed food seems to help a lot of people. I'm sorry to hear of you giving up dairy however! I know Gwen's feeling about it, but I'm one who has consumed a LOT OF DAIRY all of the way through FB & beyond with continued weight loss success. {I think I must have blogged about it a few times}. To me it is so important for women not to rely on supplements for calcium, as there is so much else in milk products that goes together with the calcium to make strong bones! There is a lot of incorrect dosing and timing of calcium supplementation that is going on that a lot of folks are spending the money and it is going right through them. Real food doesn't have that problem. There... you got my usual tirade that most any PFAer gets when they mention no dairy {w/o an intolerance reason!} !!!!!! ~Maxine~

JustPeachy said...

You have the right attitude. My last rotation went to week 7 before my body let go and you want talk about a lesson in patience. I had to finally just say that I am just going to finish to keep myself sane and then week 8 hit and BOOM! I am going into week 8 this Monday and it is the same this go around. I had a nice intital FB drop and then the same as last time...my body is fighting me again. I am soooo happy to be at week 8 and am ready to hit that sweet spot AGAIN.

Delayed reaction on my part, but I just caught your blog here on April 19th. I was catching up on Grarey's progress and she mentioned in her blog that her sis had joined so I'm here to say hello!! I'm glad my blog was an inspiration to you. I'm starting round #2 on the heels of your sis as I've been plumping up a bit in maintenance after my great transformation over the last 8 months. I consider this round #2 to be refresher and plan to see how lean I can get. My advice to you is to stick to it and believe the program will work! It will. You've got fabulous legs that will be fun to show off this summer along with a slimmer torso. Blog often and don't get discouraged. We're here to cheer you on.

Just Peachy is absolutely correct. For some women, we just hold on to that fat and then the magic just starts to happen. I was in my 10-11th week before I really started going down weight and inches with several calorie drops. I have been at the same calorie rotation for the past six weeks and am starting my 16th week of FB. I have really noticed a big difference this past month and am finally into my size 10 (from 14) So, after a very long slow start, several calorie drops, the FB is finally happening at a very rapid rate! Keep up the good work. We are here to keep you motivated. Just ask questions.

My apologies

I posted a response to a blog today to one of our PFA'ers that was meant to be funny and fortunately the person I posted it to took it as such. However a few people were probably disappointed with my response as inappropriate and in retrospect they're probably right. While it's certainly ok to joke with friends here on the blogs, the standards for me as moderator of this site are much higher and leave little room for error. So I've taken that post down and apologize if I offended anyone with my attempt at humor.

Please don't respond to this post. I don't want to start a discussion of any type. Just wanted to let you know how I feel and get back on topic.

Ode to the Trucker Man.

I’ll try to have our radio interview today with Ed on the website in the next week or two. It was just as much fun as I thought it would be and Ed had Randy and me in stitches a couple of times with his sense of humor. And then something totally unexpected happened to me (this seems to the week for that). I’ve been doing this monthly interview with Randy for a couple of years now and in that time we’ve interviewed a lot of wonderful PFA’ers and have heard some truly inspiring stories. But I never expected a truck driving dude would be the one to totally choke me up with something he said right at the end of the interview. I swear I’m turning into a chick in my old age (but Crystal says she loves it). But I had a great day today because that moment, embarrassing as it was for me, really focused me back in on why I’m here and doing what I do. When you hear the interview, you’ll understand. So while the financial rewards still elude us here at PT.com, the emotional rewards like that moment today are priceless and something money will never be able to match. How lucky am I to do the work I truly love and have the pleasure of meeting the Ed’s of the world along the way? Thank you Ed, for reminding me today why I started this journey in the first place.

I have actually been listening to your interviews with Randy for probably the whole two years, hit and miss. I finally decided to jump on the band wagon. This is my first week of FB after six weeks of conditioning. I wish I had started about three years ago when I first heard about the PFA. I was always going to lose some weight and then end with the PFA. Big mistake. I've lost 10 lbs in conditioning. And so far I love the program and am trying to convince my husband to join me. I heard the interview with Ed yesterday. I think it may have been the best one I've heard you and Randy do.

The Deer Whisperer

OK, this is not very PFA'ish for a change but hey, it’s my blog, right? Look at this picture! This is a ten point buck in my back yard this morning. This is an instance that when guys are talking about a trophy rack, we actually mean this guy! Some of you know that last year a doe gave birth in my back yard and unfortunately the fawn died in mid-delivery and couldn't be expelled by the mother. She was in terrible trouble when I found her and after making numerous frantic calls got some wonderful people from the wildlife department to come out and help me and we ultimately saved her. She has a yellow marker tag in her ear and I see her now and then at the house. Well ever since then a strange thing has started with bucks (big mature bucks like this one) stopping by my back yard and laying down to relax for a while. It is very unusual for bucks to be seen during the day and even stranger to have them come in pairs and just hang around a house. So anyhow this giant walks out of the woods into my backyard today as I was having breakfast. I opened the patio door to the deck and walked out and chatted with him for a bit. He just stood there looking at me like he actually heard something other then 'blah, blah, blah.' So I went back inside and cut up a mango and decided to see if he would actually eat a piece. I walked to the edge of the deck, showed it to him and then slowly tossed it his way. He walked over and actually ate it! So I threw a second piece and he walked up to it and ate it again. And then I just had this feeling and did something I had never done before. I took a piece and leaned out over the deck and put my hand out to him. I was stunned that he looked at me for a bit and them slowly walked up and took it right out of my hand! And with that he just plopped himself right down in my back yard in the picture you see. And he stayed there for 20 minutes when I got really stupid and thought “I’m a deer whisperer! Yes! I am one with the deer! I bet I can walk right off this deck and walk up to him and it would be OK.” And as stupid as that is, that’s just what I did. I cut up another mango, walked off the deck into the back yard towards him. I stopped about five feet from him as he was still lying down and watching me. I threw him another piece and he snapped it right up. So I SLOWLY continued to walk towards him and when I got about three feet away I got down on my knees. He looked a LOT bigger at eye level and those antlers where friggin’ huge at three feet. And I inched towards him and at about two feet away…HE GOT UP and lowered his head towards me! And now I’m thinking, “you’re not a deer whisperer, you’re an IDIOT and now a neighbor is gonna find my limp carcass in the back yard and wonder, “how’d he get all them holes in him? So I’m kneeling 24 inches in front of this mammoth trophy buck standing in front of me, and I thought ‘well nothing ventured, nothing gained’ and with that I stretched out my hand toward him with a piece of mango and hoped it wouldn’t hurt too much when he started using me for antler goring practice. And you may not believe it but I got this feeling looking into his eyes from that close that he was thinking, “you are one crazy bi-ped” but he walked up to me as I was kneeling down and took the piece from my hand! I am as amazed by the whole thing as I am stupid for doing it. Maybe I am a deer whisperer!

Hey Ric - deer have intuitively known the secret to leaness for generations before you! Now don't go messin' with his diet by giving him "candy" when he should be out foraging for his own carbs! Latest results

Since Feb 23, I have lost 25.5# off the scale but 26# of body fat. I am pretty darn happy with that! I can see that I still have a way to go..I'm not quite a close as I thought I'd be at this weight. I may have tipped in at 157.5 today but recorded 158. I think I'll try to head for 150 rather than 155. After that, we'll see. Is there a way to set a weight goal when you know what kind of body fat you'd like to achieve? I'm expecting it to be the great unknown until I get the BF. Anyway, looks like I'll be around for quite awhile..Gwen

Take a look at your graph - it tells the whole story! DOWN, DOWN, DOWN!!! Good for you, Gwen! Sheryl

Jeanie said...

To figure our your current pounds of body fat just take the body fat percentage pfa gives you and multiply it by your current weight.   For the example below I used a weight of 160 and a body fat percentage of 23.5 percent.  I have no idea where you are actually so you'll need to do this with your numbers.  The first thing you need to do is calculate your current number of pounds of fat.

current weight * body fat percentage (expressed as a decimal) = pounds of fat

Example:
   160 * .235 = 37.13 pounds of fat.

So if this person lost another 10 pounds of fat, the weight would be 150  and the pounds of fat would be 27.13.  To get back to body fat percentage:  body fat pounds /  total weight pounds = body fat percentage

Example:
   27.13/150 = 18.09

So if this person had a goal of 18% body fat, this person would need to lose 10 pounds of fat.

Make sense?

AC said...

Hey Gwen, I'm about where you are in terms of weight and body fat goals. If you have done the math regarding your desired bf% and don't expect to lose any muscle, it's pretty easy to calculate your ultimate weight at the bf you want. I'm currently at 189 at about 19% bf which puts me at about 153 of lean body mass. My goal is 15%bd which would put me at 180 lbs., assuming I lose only fat out of the last 9 pounds. So I'm figuring I'll most likely lose a little muscle say 1 or 2 lbs out of the last 9. So my final weight should fall between 177 to 179. Hope this helps you with your calculations. Cheers, Allen

DurtGurl said...

Congrats on your success so far!! To get the body fat% at a given weight goal, you need to know your current body fat. You then need to set your assumptions, the easist of which to calculate is that you will lose only fat and that you will gain no muscle. It is then a simple exercise of algebra. For instance, you say that you are now 158# and want to be 150#. If you are presently 25% BF and you lose 8 lbs of only fat then at 150# you will be 21% BF. I think that someone posted a nice little Excel spreadsheet on the Yahoogroups PFA site to do this calcution, or I'd be happy to do the calculations for you...

Back from the Big Apple!

After a great holiday break back in New York with Crystal and my family, I'm ready to get it back in gear. Crystal had never been to New York before so we took her to the city and saw the Radio City Music Hall (home of the famous Rockettes) Christmas show, which was fantastic! But this was as close as I could get to a picture with one of the Rockettes. :)

Your tax dollars at work!

Crystal took me over to Hill AFB yesterday and we watched F16's doing touch and go's. I tell you, talk about an adrenaline rush, we were a few hundred yards from the end of the runway, and watching these guys come straight over us and then point those babies up at about a 45 degree angle and be out of sight in a few seconds was awesome! Here's a pic of the new F22's currently here at the base going through testing.

Sleepless in Utah.

Hi gang! I'm here in Utah for a few days of R&R with my wife, Crystal. I'm stuck in Colorado pining away while Crystal has been busy here at Hill AFB as part of the medical support team for the new F22 jets that are being put through their final paces to be certifed as combat ready. I asked her if she could get me a ride on one of them and I don't understand why she thinks that's so hysterically funny! Here's a wedding pic of us that I really liked. Lucky man am I or what!

Those conjugal visits tend to keep the night sleepless! So glad you are enjoying your stay with Crystal!

We're podcasting, baby!

Well Matt and I are making our debut today in the podcasting arena! Our first two podcasts are up and we'll try and add one new podcast on a different aspect of Physique Transformation each week. Just click the pod icon on the masthead of the home page. Matt will have the RSS feed set up in another day or so that will actually let you download these broadcasts directly into your iPod or other MP3 player. Let me and Matt know what you think and if you have topics that you'd like discussed, send them in. OK, here's a pic of me doing my best 'Joe Cool' imitation for Crystal in Grand Junction a couple of months ago. Grand Junction is exactly half way between Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. So if we get too lonely and it's we're not scheduled to fly back and forth for a while, we both take a drive and meet in the middle for a short weekend. Only seventeen months to go and she retires and comes home for good. I can't wait.

Inch by inch.

Fitness League, Phase II, Profiles is now completed and on-line! It's taken a long time but we are really starting to build some momentum now. Pete begins programming Phase III, Groups, on Monday and Matt and I will have our first Podcasts on the site next week. This is one of my favorite pics of Crystal and me in Alaska. Ric.

I'm blogging!

Hey, this blogging thing is pretty cool! Back in my day we would walk ten miles, in a blinding snowstorm, with no shoes on, to the post office to mail a letter to our friends! Now you kids just 'blog' each other! What a world we live in today. :) But seriously, this new blogging feature, the ability to directly e-mail and talk to any PFA'er in the world for free with Skype is all part of our vision of making PT.com truly a seamlessly connected, world wide fitness community. I am so thrilled to see it all slowly starting to come together. I'm not rotating right now but will blog in from time to time. In the meantime, here's a lifestyle picture from my recent wedding and cruise to Alaska with Crystal and my family. I am so very, very fortunate to have found this wonderful woman at this stage of my life, it's like feeling that the best was saved for last. Ric.
